VidyuMyths Episode 4 - Jackle the Mantle - TimeLierG - 10-13-2026

NiGHTs into Dreams is one of those games that has this interesting, intriguing feeling to it as though you could stumble across something you've never seen before in it despite playing through it hundreds of times, I had a Sega Saturn when I was a kid but I never had NiGHTs for it. I first played NiGHTs in 2017 on the Steam version of the game before getting it for the Saturn later on, I'm going to get the PS2 version of it soon as well. After a week of playing it and unlocking everything in the Steam release it became one of my favorite games, there's something so charming and mysterious about the game that keeps me coming back to it every year, the development of the game and all of the unused stuff inside and outside of NiGHTs is also very interesting to me.

This post (or episode if you are watching the video version of this blog post) isn't about the unused boss Self or his internal name of Selph, the King Pian or Super Pian, the blue door seen in beta footage, the unused Spiral Claris level or the robotic mecha version of NiGHTs that the Nightopians can supposedly play with, it's actually about something involving Jackle's boss arena. Before I talk about the mystery here I'd like to talk about something similar that can happen in Puffy's arena after the boss fight is over, to see this choose the level Splash Garden and make your way through the stage until you get to the boss fight with Puffy, when you are almost at the end of her arena time the final hit perfectly so that there's a "2" on the timer, if you did this correctly you'll see a secret animation of a closet door opening and an umbrella falling out of it. This is the kind of stuff I love to see in video games, I know I mention it a lot on my blog and in videos but there's something about unexplained things in games that I adore, the question of why a developer added something is great to theorize on, especially with other people.

Speaking of theorizing on that, really though, why does this happen? It reminds me of one of the ways you can unlock Luigi in Super Smash Bros Melee which also has a two in the timer as a requirement, more on the "umbrella" though, that's just what I've always called it since I first saw it, in the files for the remastered version of the game the object is labeled as "mo_jack", it looks like some kind of stick and it appears to have a mask on it. The stick thing falling out of it doesn't work in Sonic into Dreams oddly enough, I heard this is due to the timer working differently in that mode within Christmas NiGHTs. Is there anything else in the game like this? According to a rumor there is...

This is the reason why I mentioned this event in Puffy's boss room, there's supposedly something that can happen during or after the fight with Jackle, specifically involving the guillotine in his boss room. Under certain conditions it is said thisĀ guillotine can sometimes be seen dropping, normally the blade of the guillotine and the device itself is stationary and doesn't do anything, but according to the rumor it is capable of playing an animation. Is there something more to this device? There's a few unused objects among other things associated with Jackle's boss room, this one was actually found recently, at some point in development this one now unused background of a desert would have been used for an area the player would have been teleported to for a memory matching game using all of Jackle's tarot cards before supposedly being teleported back to the boss arena. During Jackle's boss fight he only uses one of his tarot cards as opposed to all of the other ones from this scrapped memory matching game.

I thought I would mention that unused aspect of the boss fight as there's a few rumors of it still being viewable in the game, similar to the rumor of the guillotine dropping. The first mentions of the supposed guillotine Easter egg seemingly originate from a fan made wiki for NiGHTs into Dreams that's either no longer available or the detail about the guillotine was removed from it, when I made my other post on the mysteries of NiGHTs I saw a forum post speaking of this fan made wiki and the detail about the supposed Easter egg but it appears even that post talking about it is also gone, the only other mention of this isĀ from a popular NiGHTs fan named Digi Valentine and I assume he also heard of this supposed Easter egg from the same place.

While getting the footage for the video version of this post I decided to have a duel with Jackle a few times but I haven't seen the guillotine drop. In all of my years of playing this game I haven't encountered this happening, people have looked through the game and haven't found any animations for the guillotine either. I'm wondering how this rumor actually started, that's a mystery in itself, maybe it didn't originate on a fan made wiki for the game but regardless of what site it came from my question is why the rumor was made, did someone actually see the guillotine drop or thought that's what they saw? This one might just remain a mystery...
